Wenelisa Navarro loved her career as a physician, but when she woke up one day to the realization that she was working excruciating hours, she knew something had to change. A physician first in the Philippines, Wenelisa moved with her children to New York where she took a job as a Registered Nurse and began a residency in Internal Medicine. "I always wanted to do something dynamic," she says. "Ever since I was little I wanted to be a physician." After her residency, Wenelisa started her own private practice, worked in the emergency room at a local hospital, and was a medical specialist. Soon she was working 80-120 hours a week - with two 24-hour shifts included in that total. In addition, she would fly back and forth to the Philippines, where she operated a free clinic. "It was grind, grind, grind," she says. "I was tired all the time and was never home, but that's how I thought life for a doctor was supposed to be. "Wanting to recharge, Wenelisa moved her family to Maryland. Still working in the ER, Wenelisa started a business that placed Filipino nurses in Maryland hospitals - a specialty that caught the attention of Stephen Weinstein. Known for his ability to turn around hospitals that were facing financial problems, Stephen initially wanted to meet with Wenelisa regarding nurse placement opportunities. Two months later, he contacted her about NIKKEN.
